Flaxman Fine Jewellery is an independent jeweller. Well-established and respected, the owner has a discerning eye, developed at Sotheby’s and the Burlington Arcade. The shop always has a fantastic selection of antique Victorian engagement rings and the stock varies from week to week. Whatever the preferred taste of the wearer, Victorian engagement rings offer ring settings and gemstones which have a broad appeal.

Flaxman Fine Jewellery has years of expertise in guiding purchasers through the buying process. Supportive, knowledgeable advisors will be on hand to guide the buyer towards the best engagement ring for the wearer’s style and taste.

An engagement ring becomes its owner’s most beloved and valuable possession for sentimental reasons and insurance purposes. That’s why it’s important to make the right choice of ring. With so many rings to choose from, knowing where to go for expert advice is crucial. A respected jeweller, Flaxman Fine Jewellery is a must because clients can choose from a wonderful range of exquisite rings.

The Victorian era covers the long period between 1837 and 1901. If it could be afforded by the customer smaller diamonds might be used in the setting. Snake rings were worn, popularised by Queen Victoria herself, symbolising eternal love. Semi-precious stones were frequently used. Some brides were given their birthstone set into an engagement ring.

In 1870 diamond mines in South Africa opened. As the quantity of larger diamonds being mined increased, so did the market for them amongst Victorians. Engagement rings set with a solitaire diamond became popular. This popularity was confirmed when the upmarket jewellers Tiffany & Co created a plain band, six-claw diamond solitaire setting in 1886. This set the fashion archetype for diamond engagement rings for many years.

Daisy patterns of a central pearl or other jewel surrounded by small diamonds were popular as well as other natural motifs. Half hoop rings with three gemstones representing eternal commitment to each other in the past, present and future were also fashionable. Victorian rings represent aspects of the great love Queen Victoria had for her husband Prince Albert. They appear in all the precious metals, although platinum rings are only seen towards the end of the period. Rose gold and yellow gold were much used prior to that.

Flaxman Fine Jewellery has the expertise to help buyers choose with confidence. For example, when buying a diamond, it’s worth knowing about the 4Cs. One of the best known Cs stands for carat - the measure for the weight of a gemstone. One carat weighs in at 0.2gm. Each carat is divided into one hundred points. Understanding these basics will give a guide to the size of the stone in a ring, but knowledgeable staff are on hand to guide customers through the more technical side of gemology if required.

Ensuring customers have peace of mind is vital to Flaxman Fine Jewellery. This means they offer a bespoke service for every customer buying an engagement ring. Not only does the company provide high-quality customer service throughout the selection process, but the level of customer aftercare is also outstanding. Every customer benefits from free engagement ring resizing. There is also a 14-day money-back guarantee. With this level of service, every client can rest assured that every purchase can be made with confidence.
